Designing Inclusive Preschool Activities
Simple ways to make preschool activities accessible across communication, movement, and sensory preferences.
Offer multiple ways to join
Participation can mean touching, pointing, watching, moving an object, using words, or working beside a peer. State these options before the activity begins so every child has a legitimate entry point.
Make sensory choices explicit
Provide both sensory-seeking and sensory-avoiding options. A child might use a tool instead of hands, choose a quieter station, add more movement, or observe before joining.
Keep directions visible and short
Use a small number of steps, demonstrate them, and keep materials arranged in the order they are used. Predictability frees attention for exploration and social connection.
Observe, then adjust
Notice which parts invite sustained engagement and where children pause. Change the environment or prompt before assuming a child cannot participate. The plan should respond to the learner, not the reverse.
